Offshore Pelagics and Steady Inshore Action with Tail Gator Charters
Key Largo - Monroe, FL
Summer is in full swing here in Key Largo, and the local waters are incredibly productive right now. With optimal water temperatures and favorable currents, we are seeing highly consistent numbers on both our deep sea runs and our shallow water coastal trips. Whether you are bringing the family out for a relaxed morning or heading into deep water to battle heavy pelagics, the Florida Keys fishery is delivering.
Offshore Fishing: Mahi Mahi and Blackfin Tuna For our guests heading 6 to 20 miles offshore, the bite has been excellent. We are consistently finding solid schools of Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) moving along weed lines and debris, making for highly successful half-day and 3/4 day trips. Blackfin Tuna are also showing up in good numbers.
Trolling with live bait and artificial lures using our Penn and Daiwa heavy tackle has been the most effective strategy this month. The winds have been highly cooperative, allowing our 22-foot center console to reach the deep water fishing grounds quickly and comfortably, giving our anglers maximum time to fill the ice box.
Inshore Fishing: Snapper and Barracuda If you prefer staying closer to the coast, our inshore trips—running just 2 to 4 miles out—have been perfect, especially for families and beginner anglers. The shallow waters (10 to 20 feet) are remaining very calm.
We are seeing a highly active feed from Mangrove Snapper and Yellowtail Snapper around the local reefs and flats. Using light tackle and live bait, these trips offer a highly engaging, hands-on experience for kids catching their first fish. We are also getting frequent visits from aggressive Great Barracuda, which always put up a fantastic fight on light spinning gear.
Captain’s Tip for the Month The early morning departures at 8:00 AM are currently offering the most consistent bite windows before the midday heat sets in. However, our afternoon inshore trips at 3:30 PM are seeing a great late-day feeding push as the sun gets lower.
Fish with Captain Bill Miller We provide all the premium gear, fishing licenses, live bait, and even complimentary catch filleting at the end of your trip. All you need to bring is sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and your preferred snacks.
